Eco-house owned by professional surfer in Scarborough near Cape Town

Professional surfer Flo Jung, one of Germany’s top wave surfers, built himself an eco-house in Scarborough near Cape Town and chose to use the leading international high-performance wood Accoya, which we delivered to Cape Town from Graz.

Thanks to its excellent characteristics, Accoya is ideally equipped for the challenges posed by wind, sun and sea air. The house, which has a sea view, can be seen with its facade and terrace constructed from oiled Accoya.

The natural greying process still gives the wooden façade a beautiful sheen after more than two years, at the start of the 2022 surfing season.

What are the hallmarks of the perfect dream home? The answer is obvious to the young family of professional surfer Florian Jung and interior designer Marie Christen Jung: walking distance to the sea, functional and simple design, ecological construction, and the elimination of anything that does not quintessentially contribute to a deep sense of well-being.

The underlying thought behind the building project was to demonstrate how a home can be constructed from materials that are inexpensive and still natural, that makes use of local resources and is completely self-sufficient. The plot’s location is truly unique. Situated around 35 km from Cape Town, in the immediate vicinity of the Cape of Good Hope, the weather is not only extreme – with plenty of wind and waves – but also has a guaranteed more than 3,700 hours of sun annually that can be used as natural resources. The aim was to set new standards in cooperation with partners in the construction industry and experts from the energy sector, including insulation and walls made of hemp concrete, impregnated high-performance Accoya wood and the latest energy generation technologies. A house that is run in harmony with nature and that harnesses its available resources.

“We are presenting a vision of the future, one that is sustainable, resilient and quite frankly magnificent”, said Florian Jung.
“If we consider that up to 70 percent of global carbon emissions are associated with the construction, operation and furnishing of buildings, the project stands as a prime example of how we can transform our future, beginning with life at home.”

“We wanted a house that respects its surroundings, taps into the concept of autonomous functions and at the same time exudes contemporary simplicity”, added interior designer Marie Christen.
